This is a huge lot of antique Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian textiles found in a box at an auction. It was probably the stock from an antique shop as some items had price tickets on them. However, this lot had been packed away for decades so this is the first time the contents have seen the light of day for quite some time!
The handiwork is astonishing with the most intricate lace, beautiful embroidery and precise attention to detail. Likewise, the materials used are impressive with napper leather gloves, silk toddler shorts, mother of pearl buttons, silk handkerchief, sheepskin neck warmer and fine quality cotton. The tiny sizes are another remarkable thing about this lot: dainty gloves, petite toddler clothing and and the most beautiful embroidery panel for a very small lady's cleavage.
It's a joy to see and touch, although bittersweet as it is testament to the quality of work of a bygone age and a stark contrast to modern standards.
The items are for sale on an auction as it's so hard to price. It will be of interest to avid collectors of antique textiles but also to museums. This lot is an exhibition in itself! Photos have been added below for your enjoyment and as a keepsake of a glimpse into the past in the spirit of preserving and not destroying our history.
